The Bolle di Magadino (Magadino Ponds) – one of the nine Swiss holm landscapes of international importance according to the Swiss Academy of the Sciences – is a deltaic region on the oriental shores of Lake Maggiore, at the mouth of the rivers Ticino and Verzasca. It is the last fragment of a natural landscape that used to span across the whole Magadino Plain and is a rarity today in Europe. The Bolle di Magadino offer a great variety of environments; they were formed by the advancement of the terra firma towards the lake and have since been colonised by animals and plants.
